The Bag Ladies Projet

A residential project

Contact us for more information

The Bag Ladies project includes the following:

Community Engagement:

The project partners with artists, artisans, teachers and the local community to organize residencies, workshops and masterclasses. This promotes the exchange of knowledge, social equity, solidarity within society and ensures equal opportunities for all.

Exploration of Arts and crafts

This initiative delves into our cultural roots by examining ancient arts and crafts techniques, such as mask making, weaving, basketry, knitting, crochet, macramé… These skills are integrated into contemporary activities and events.

Female leadership:

The project is led by Tracey Boot and her team of female artists and artisans. They play a key role in activities, bringing their expertise and perspective. The initiative values female leadership, promotes gender equality and inspires young people to pursue their ambitions.

interactive Performance :

The project features a performance by The Bag Ladies team, enriched with musical interludes and audience interactions, promoting community engagement. Their interactive approach, combining humour and art creating a space for free expression and an enriching collective experience.

what does the project involve?

yarn bombing

“Yarn bombing” is a bit like graffiti which has swapped its spray paint for balls of coloured wool! Yarn and textiles replace paint and chalk. Also known as wool bombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting or even graffiti knitting, it is street art that uses weaving, knots and stitches to create new and colourful environments for all to enjoy.

Sustainability and Ecology:

The emphasis is placed on the use of ecological and recycled materials, thus raising participants’ awareness of environmental issues. Workshops include sessions on creative recycling and reducing the carbon footprint, encouraging a lifestyle that is more respectful of our planet.

Diversity and Inclusion:

The project strives to include diverse voices and perspectives, welcoming participants from all backgrounds and integrating diverse cultural practices. This enriches artistic dialogue and strengthens intercultural understanding, creating a stronger and unified social fabric.

Bring The Bag Ladies Project to Your Community!

Host a residency that combines creativity, tradition, and innovation. Led by professional artist Tracey Boot, this residential project uses “graffiti knitting” (or yarn bombing) to transform local spaces into vibrant, colourful experiences. We invite a wide range of partners to collaborate with us to strengthen the “social fabric” through art and sustainability.

Why Partner with Us?

Our project is ideal for schools, offering a hands-on approach to creative recycling and environmental awareness. We provide an educational resource pack to support students as they learn the “sacred art” of giant arm knitting.

Foster social equity and solidarity by bringing people together for a collective experience. This project is a model for positive social interaction, welcoming participants of all backgrounds and ages—from 3 to 103—to share in the fun of creation.

Join us in an exchange of knowledge. We delve into cultural roots by examining ancient techniques such as mask making, weaving, basketry, and macramé, integrating these skills into contemporary street art.

Rejuvenate public squares, parks, and gardens with a non-permanent, eco-friendly art installation. The residency culminates in an interactive performance and a colorful promenade that engages the entire town.

What a Residency Includes:

Collaborative Planning: Meeting partners to select the perfect space or objects to “bomb”.
Creative Workshops: Learning arm knitting and creating “bulky yarn” from recycled materials like old curtains, clothes, and plastic bags.
Installation & Performance: A final event where the art is shared with the public, often accompanied by The Bag Ladies show, featuring masked theatre and music.
Ready to transform your space? We offer tailored quotes based on your budget, number of participants, and project ambition.
